Tory Infighting: Local MP slammed by Conservative activists
Controversial Tory MP Rob Wilson has been heavily criticised by commenters on the Conservative Home website over a'vacuous, petty and nasty article'.
Mr Wilson compared Alastair Campbell and Peter Mandelson to Robert Mugabe and wrote that he felt 'sick' when shaking Campbell's hand after a charity football match.
Responses from the website, often described as the online 'home' for Conservative Party activists, included, 'What a nasty piece. If you feel sick at the prospect of shaking a man's hand it is you who should be ashamed Mr Wilson' and 'An incredibly petty piece. Sorry, I thought MPs could rise above all this'. Others likened it to a 'schoolboy' article and wrote that 'it begs the question how well he is doing in office communicating the needs of his constituents and why he doesn't hand over his responsibilities to any old rent-a-gob!'
Labour spokesperson for Reading East, Anneliese Dodds commented, "The full consequences of the current financial instability are yet to be felt by ordinary hard-working people. Across the world prime ministers, presidents, and financial leaders of all political colours are working together to bring some order and confidence back into the markets and to minimise the effects for their citizens.
All Members of Parliament have a key role to play in providing leadership, advice and reassurance in such unprecedented times. I have written to the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Yvette Cooper MP, to ask for a briefing note so that I can provide the best and most up-to-date advice and information to those who come to me for help at this time. I do hope that Mr Wilson will start to take similar, constructive, action for his constituents; rather than wasting his time making spiteful and personal remarks on websites".
